A Mother’s Day Reflection: Honoring Our Mental Health Journey

  • May 13, 2024

Motherhood is a beautiful journey filled with love, laughter, joy, and cherished memories. Yet, it is not always filled with sunshine and rainbows. Being a mother can be one of the most rewarding experiences, but it can also be one of the most challenging. Mothers often face numerous struggles, including mental health issues such as stress, depression, and anxiety. These mental health challenges are not uncommon; in fact, approximately 1 in 5 mothers experience depression or anxiety. The pressure to be a “perfect mom,” influenced by friends, family, and especially social media, can create anxiety and depression when we feel we haven't met societal expectations.

I would like to share a personal story. I am one of the one in five women who have experienced postpartum depression and anxiety. I am a mother to four beautiful children, whom I cherish dearly. However, after the birth of my son in 2017, I found myself struggling significantly with my mental health. Despite never having experienced such a low point before, I could not pinpoint the root cause of my sadness and anxiety. I felt embarrassed and helpless, as I had never been informed about the emotional challenges many mothers face after giving birth. I soon realized that feeling intense sadness, worry, and exhaustion during this phase was normal. Determined to break free from this vicious cycle of negative thoughts and emotions, I reached out to my doctor, who prescribed medication to help me cope. While the medication was beneficial, I knew it wasn't the sole solution to my struggles. I confided in an older friend, also a mother, for advice and support. A combination of medication, self-care, and emotional support from friends and family improved my mental health tremendously. Knowing I was not alone and that my feelings were normal made me feel less isolated and more comfortable seeking help.

Motherhood can be a challenging journey, but it is crucial for mothers to prioritize their mental health and seek support when needed. By practicing self-care and seeking support from doctors, family, and friends, mothers can manage mental health struggles and savor the beautiful moments that come with motherhood. It is the most challenging journey but also the most rewarding.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you incredibly strong and beautiful women. Remember to remind a mom she is doing a great job raising her little ones.
